Get ready to achieve something incredible!
We have partnered with adventure company Discover Adventure to offer this once-in-a-lifetime challenge climbing North Africa’s highest peak – Mount Toubkal.
By taking on this challenge you’ll also raise money for our New Deaf Academy Appeal to support young Deaf lives by building a world-class new Academy, in the Devon seaside town of Exmouth.
The High Atlas Mountains run south-west through Morocco. They are remote, barren and absolutely stunning. Our challenge is to climb their highest peak – and the highest in North Africa: Mount Toubkal, at 4,167m.
Our ascent is tough, steep and rocky, and the effects of being at altitude add to the challenge. However, the magnificent views from the summit – reaching across to the Sahara Desert – and our sense of achievement more than compensate for our efforts.
We also witness the local way of life as we pass through colourful villages, where Berbers farm in the river valleys and herd goats and sheep in the mountains. The ancient city of Marrakech, with its labyrinthine streets and intriguing souks, provides the perfect contrast.
By taking on the Mt Toubkal Challenge you will help us to build a world-class new Deaf Academy, giving current and future generations of Deaf Children and young people from across the UK a bespoke learning and living environment. Your support will transform their lives and enable them to reach their full potential. Join us today, have the experience of a lifetime, and help change a child’s life.
There are three different ways to pay for your trek: raise the full fundraising target, and pay just your registration fee; raise part of the fundraising target, then pay towards the rest (plus registration fee); or pay your registration fee and full tour cost. See the table below for amounts. You can find full explanations of the costs plus what’s included and what isn’t here.
How fit will I need to be?
This trekking challenge is graded as ‘tough’ – it is all about endurance fitness, rather than speed and it is certainly not a race; however a good level of fitness and determination is required! Discover Adventure will provide you with a training plan to follow, to make sure you are ready.
Will I need to carry my own bag when trekking?
Your main kit bags will be transported by mules between each overnight stop, so you will only need to carry a day-pack yourself with your trekking essentials (i.e. water, spare layers, waterproof, sun-cream, hat, camera, snacks).
What will the weather be like?
The days are usually warm, clear and sunny at lower elevations with average temperatures from 18-32°C, though it gets much cooler higher up, and early mornings and evenings can be very cold. Though rain is unlikely, there is always a possibility of a wet or stormy day, and it can be very windy on exposed ridges or peaks, and on summit day.
Are flights included?
Yes, flights from the UK are included in the cost of the trip.
How do I fundraise?
There are lots of ways to raise money in the 12 months before your trek. We recommend organising events such as a Cake and a Cuppa morning or a charity sports match, undertaking a sponsored challenge such as our Voice Off sponsored silence, and setting up a JustGiving page and asking for donations on social media. When you sign up we will provide you with a free fundraising pack, and we are here to advise and support you on every step of your fundraising journey.
